The classifi cation of the technical building catastrophes of reinforced concrete structures on the degree of predictability is presented. The terms of the proposed classifi cation were taken from one of classifi cations of natural, geological catastrophes. In the general case catastrophes are divided into slow catastrophes («Trend»«and «Extremum») and quick catastrophes («Stripping»). The used classifi cation appears to be a more justifi ed and objective for building catastrophes than for natural ones. The author has managed to classify the role of the human factor in the manifestation of catastrophes. Catastrophes of the types «Trend» and «Extremum» to a greater or lesser extent depend on organizational and social factors. The role of human factor in catastrophe of the type of «Extremum» is the lack of knowledge of properties of materials in work of structures and their long-term performance. The «Extremum» is connected with scientifi c and technical problems which are discussed more specifi cally in the monograph. The new conception of obtaining a stage of a structure under every degree of loading includes parameters of reserve of serviceability of a structure. The parameter of serviceability coincides with the information entropy in character of changes of their curves. This permits the use of scale coeffi cient in design. Using serviceability criterion means a design on a new stage in the normal method of the limit states, i. e. the longitudinal crack resistance. Introduction of a new criterion of serviceability taking into account a scale coeffi cient promotes determining a stage of work and an assessment of expedience of rehabilitation of a structure damaged by unknown load. In the monografe there are examples of analyses of well-know building catastrophes. The book is addressed to the attention of engineering and scientifi c and technical staff while designing for the purpose of protection of the environment from technical catastrophes. The book must be helpful for inspection, observation, strengthening, rehabilitation and reconstruction of structures in the condition of the liquidation of the consequences of catastrophes and wrecks.
